FireIce Used in Canadian Airtankers; Assist in Containing Wildfires

Announced today that FireIce was successfully deployed in water-scooping firefighting aircraft and fire engines by New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources, and was able to aid in containing one of the first wildfires of the season. The mission marks the first time that FireIce was used on a live fire in Canada, and is part of a season-long pilot program. The program was jointly designed by the province and FireIce team, and has included the purchase of FireIce for use in aerial and fire engine applications.

"The 2014 New Brunswick fire season began after an unseasonably long winter. Dead vegetation and windy conditions left the forests vulnerable for high levels of fire activity," stated Ed Kleiman, GelTech's Wildland Operations Manager. "We were happy to be ready with FireIce when the fires started. The agency will continue to deploy FireIce as necessary during the season."

This latest success comes at a time when the FireIce Wildland Division continues to gain momentum in 2014. Multiple state and federal agencies across the U.S. and Canada are evaluating FireIce as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to existing fire chemicals used in wildland firefighting. Additional pilot programs and evaluations will be coming online over the summer.

New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources is responsible for forest fire protection on all forest and rangeland in the province. New Brunswick is also a member of the Northeastern Forest Fire Protection Commission, and provides mutual assistance and resource sharing to member agencies including: Maine; New Hampshire; Vermont; New York; Massachusetts; Connecticut; Rhode Island; Quebec; Newfoundland Labrador; Nova Scotia; US Forest Service; US National Park Service; US Fish & Wildlife Service. In a typical year there are over 9,000 forest fires in Canada, burning an average of 2.5 million hectares (ha).
